RENTAL REGISTRIES LIMIT RENTAL AVAILABILITY

Monterey's rental registry is "rent regulation".


It will:

  • Mandate data collection of all rental properties
  • Mandate data collection on all tenants
  • Make all data public 
  • Cause owners to remove property from the rental market
  • Lead to rent control (aka - "stabilization")

  • Disincentivizes property maintenance
  • Reduces quality and supply of available housing
  • Enable the city to impose restrictions on property owners as to pricing, rental increases, pass-throughs, and other unknown actions
  • Cause rent increases up to maximum annual limits
  • Cause owners to remove property from the rental market
